“Minor Injuries Reported as Pickup Crashes Into Parked Aircraft, Cancelling Multiple Flights”
In a rare and unusual incident at Sydney Airport, a Mitsubishi Triton pickup collided with a stationary Airbus A320, resulting in the cancellation of multiple flights. The accident occurred around 5:30 am on Monday, involving an airport fleet truck driven by a security contractor’s staff member. While the driver sustained minor injuries, the incident prompted precautionary checks on the aircraft’s condition, which is estimated to incur repair costs exceeding AU$500,000.
The Mitsubishi Triton, part of the airport’s fleet, collided with the Airbus A320 at Gate Four. The pickup was reportedly driven by an airport employee, and the cause of the accident is under investigation. An internal memo intended for Jetstar staff revealed that the driver was trapped in the vehicle during the incident. Fortunately, no other Jetstar employees or crew members were involved, and there were no passengers on board the stationary plane, which was being towed to the gate at the time of the collision.
Paramedics attended to the driver at the scene, and the individual was later taken to the hospital for treatment of minor injuries. Sydney Airport assured that there were no serious injuries resulting from the incident. The airport’s announcement mentioned that the Airbus A320 is undergoing precautionary engineering checks to assess any damage. The collision disrupted the schedule of Jetstar flights, with six services canceled on Monday. Alternative same-day flights were arranged for affected passengers. The incident highlights the challenges of coordinating ground activities in busy airport environments and the importance of safety protocols to prevent such occurrences.
