Deepal’s Third Model Blends Rugged Design with Range-Extended Electric Propulsion

The upcoming Deepal G318, the latest addition to Changan’s Deepal brand, has been revealed in real-life photos following its initial appearance in computer-generated images. Positioned as a rugged, boxy SUV, the G318 derives its name from China’s Highway 318 on the China/Nepal border, emphasizing its adventurous spirit. While being an electric vehicle (EV), it features an unconventional front-end design without a traditional grille, opting for a large intake on the front bumper.

Measuring 4,915 mm in length, 1,985 mm in width, 1,885 mm in height, and sitting on a 2,880 mm wheelbase, the G318 embodies a robust and muscular presence. The front end showcases LED headlights and distinctive black body cladding, complemented by flared wheel arches and rocker panels. The rear features a spare wheel carrier, thin vertically-oriented LED taillights, and a towbar-ready blacked-out bumper. The spare wheel carrier can be replaced with a small storage box, and the SUV can be equipped with roof rails supporting forward-facing driving lights.

The G318 operates as a range-extended EV, featuring a 1.5-liter petrol engine with 110 kW (147 hp) serving as a generator. The entry-level variant pairs this engine with a single rear electric motor producing 185 kW (248 hp), while the flagship model combines the 1.5-liter engine with two electric motors for a combined output of 316 kW (424 hp). The vehicle’s battery pack details have not been officially confirmed, but it is rumored to utilize a lithium-ion phosphate pack from CALB, available in 18.4 kWh and 35.1 kWh capacities. The G318 can tow up to 1,600 kg (3,527 lbs).

While the interior remains undisclosed, the G318 is poised to offer a blend of off-road capability, rugged design, and eco-friendly electric performance. Although local sales have not commenced in China, the anticipated starting price is around 300,000 yuan or $42,000. The Deepal G318 is expected to cater to consumers seeking a distinctive, adventure-ready EV with a range-extended propulsion system.
