A reengineered 1965 Volkswagen Beetle, currently listed on Mecum Auctions, showcases a remarkable transformation from the classic people’s car into a high-performance speedster. Built with the ambition to go faster, this Beetle features a potent turbocharged setup that adds a thrilling twist to the iconic model’s legacy.
Under the hood, the Beetle boasts a meticulously crafted engine equipped with a Garrett GT2871 turbocharger, tuned to 20 psi for optimal performance. The turbocharging setup includes a CB Performance hideaway turbo header converted to a Tial V-band, a Tial stainless 0.63 exhaust housing, a Holley 600 double pumper carburetor blow-thru, and a Tial MV-R wastegate. While the exact horsepower figure remains undisclosed, it undoubtedly surpasses the original Beetle’s modest 25 horsepower.
The built engine incorporates a range of enhancements, including CB Performance crank and rods, an aluminum CB Performance fully flowed case, CB Performance Street Eliminator heads, Jayee billet pushrod tubes, and Chromo billet push rods. Handling oiling and fueling tasks are components such as a Holley Red pump, Clyde Berg breather box, and Gene Berg o-ring oil pump and pressure relief cover.
Beyond the powerhouse, the Beetle features practical upgrades for an enhanced driving experience. Updated suspension and four-wheel disc brakes contribute to better road handling and improved stopping power, accommodating the increased engine potency. Despite the performance-oriented modifications, the exterior and interior maintain a largely stock appearance, with subtle additions like aftermarket BRM wheels and gauges for monitoring turbo boost and engine rpm.
This turbocharged Volkswagen Beetle is set to hit the auction block at Glendale 2024, taking place at the State Farm Stadium from March 5-9. Alongside this spirited Beetle, Mecum Auctions will present an array of classic American cars, including the 1978 Chevrolet Corvette Pace Car Edition Coupe, and Japanese legends such as a 2002 Nissan R34 Skyline GT-R M-Spec Nur, promising an exciting lineup for automotive enthusiasts.
