The Tata Punch EV Features a Redesigned Face and All-New Electric Platform
Indian automaker Tata has expanded its lineup with the introduction of the Punch EV, an all-electric version of its compact SUV. Joining the existing gasoline and CNG versions, the Punch EV showcases a new electric-dedicated platform and a refreshed design.
Exterior Highlights:
The Punch EV’s exterior design incorporates Tata’s latest styling elements, featuring a redesigned face with full-width LEDs, vertical bumper intakes housing main headlights, and a grille-less nose hosting a front-mounted charging port. The profile and rear of the EV remain largely similar to its internal combustion engine (ICE) counterpart, with the addition of new 16-inch wheels and the absence of a tailpipe.
Interior and Technology:
Inside the cabin, the Punch EV offers a high-tech experience, including a digital dashboard with dual 10.25-inch screens (lower-spec models feature dual 7-inch displays). Notably, the Punch EV becomes the first Tata vehicle to offer a heated steering wheel. The cabin features a contemporary rotary shifter, touch controls, and a wireless smartphone charger. The trunk provides 17.7 cubic feet (500 liters) of luggage space, expandable to 47.7 cubic feet (1,350 liters) by folding down the rear seat.
Performance and Platform:
While detailed specifications are yet to be disclosed, the Punch EV is based on Tata’s new EV-dedicated platform called acti.ev. This platform is modular and supports various configurations, including front-wheel drive (FWD), rear-wheel drive (RWD), and all-wheel drive (AWD), along with different battery capacities. Tata mentions a range of 186-373 miles (300-600 km) and compatibility with up to 150 kW fast charging. The platform is equipped with the Snapdragon Digital Chassis Platform by Qualcomm, supporting over-the-air updates and 5G connectivity. Safety is a priority, with plans for up to Level 2+ Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) by Mobileye.
Availability and Pricing:
Tata is currently accepting pre-orders for the Punch EV in India, with pricing expected to be in the range of Rs 10-13 lakh (approximately $12,025-15,632). The Punch EV is set to contribute to Tata’s electrification efforts and provide consumers with an affordable electric SUV option.
