Two-Time IMSA DPi Champion Aims to Further Develop Porsche 963 LMDh in Dual-Series Strategy
Dane Cameron, a two-time IMSA DPi champion, is set to make his return to IMSA competition with Porsche Penske Motorsport for the 2024 season. The 35-year-old Californian driver rejoins the team after a two-year stint in the World Endurance Championship racing for Penske’s LMP2 and Porsche 963 Hypercar squads. This move comes as part of a strategic swap with Australian driver Matt Campbell.
Cameron’s return is a key element in Porsche Penske Motorsport’s dual-series strategy, aiming to optimize the development of the Porsche 963 LMDh car by participating in both IMSA and WEC. The team aims to address challenges faced during the car’s debut season and capitalize on cross-pollination of insights between the two series.
Reflecting on the team’s progress, Cameron stated, “If you look back at the second half of the year in both programs, there were better results. And there’s still lofty expectations for it, so still a lot of work to be done, still issues here and there that need to be cleaned up – on the reliability side in the longer races, things like this.”
The Porsche Penske Motorsport team has undergone changes and improvements in its structure, and Cameron emphasizes the ongoing commitment to push for improvements in speed and reliability, particularly in preparation for the significant races ahead.
Discussing the recent Daytona manufacturer group test, Cameron explained the team’s approach, with one car focusing on endurance running and the other seeking performance enhancements. He highlighted the importance of continuous improvement and the team’s goal to enhance both speed and reliability.
