Chery unveils Omoda 5 EV with impressive features at Geneva/Qatar Motor Show

Chery, the renowned Chinese automaker, has unveiled the Omoda 5 EV at the Geneva/Qatar Motor Show ahead of its European launch next year. This electric vehicle is set to make a remarkable entry into the European and other global markets.

The Omoda 5 EV made its initial appearance at the Shanghai Auto Show earlier this year, and Chery has now released additional details and images. This electric vehicle is equipped with a 61 kWh battery pack that powers an electric motor mounted on the front wheels, producing 204 horsepower.

In comparison to its internal combustion engine (ICE) counterpart, the Omoda 5 SUV, the electric variant doesn’t prioritize speed, aligning with the typical nature of electric vehicles. Nevertheless, it can accelerate from 0 to 62 mph (100 km/h) in a respectable 7.6 seconds and offers an estimated range of 280 miles (450 km) on a single charge. Charging is expedited with support for 110 kW DC fast charging, enabling a rapid 0-80% charge in just 30 minutes.

Visually, the Omoda 5 EV exhibits a few distinctive design changes compared to the standard model. Most notably, the expansive grille present on the combustion model has been replaced with a painted surface featuring sharp lines. The lower grille of the Omoda 5 EV is unique and features vertical slats, enhancing its electric identity. Designers have also made adjustments to the LED headlights, incorporated prominent Omoda lettering, and modified the main headlamp clusters.

Alterations are also noticeable at the rear of the vehicle. For instance, the rear spoiler has been subtly redesigned, and Chery branding has been added to the light bar. The electric powertrain eliminates the need for exhausts, which have been replaced with a simple black bumper.

This release follows Chery’s recent announcement that the Omoda brand will be entering the European market, offering both ICE and electric versions. The ICE model is powered by a 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, delivering 197 horsepower and 214 lb-ft (290 Nm) of torque.
