Performance-oriented, stylish, and high-tech, Alfa Romeo’s EV plans unveiled.
Alfa Romeo is gearing up to introduce a large electric SUV in 2027, poised to take on formidable competitors such as the BMW iX and high-performance electric SUVs like the Lotus Eletre. In an interview with Autocar, Alfa Romeo’s CEO, Jean-Philippe Imparato, outlined the company’s plans for this exciting new EV.
This forthcoming electric SUV follows the replacement for the Stelvio, which is expected to arrive in 2026. Alfa Romeo is making a clear shift toward the upmarket segment as it transitions to electric power. Their ambitions include entering the E-segment with a sedan that will compete with the likes of the BMW i5 and Mercedes-Benz EQE, even though Alfa Romeo has historically faced challenges in these segments.
The new electric SUV, built on the STLA Large platform shared with the upcoming Stelvio and Giulia replacements, will distinguish itself with a lower body style compared to traditional SUVs. Alfa’s decision to adopt this design approach is aimed at enhancing aerodynamics and preserving the sporty DNA that characterizes Alfa Romeo’s driving experience. This platform can accommodate up to three motors and offers the potential for delivering over 1,000 horsepower, signaling the automaker’s commitment to performance.
“The drivability of the car, that’s where I put the energy,” emphasized Imparato, highlighting Alfa’s performance focus. This performance-oriented approach extends to the vehicle’s design, with the new SUV set to convey the appearance of a rear-wheel-drive vehicle.
“I think an Alfa Romeo is a driver’s car,” noted design chief Alejandro Mesonero-Romanos. “We have to put the emphasis in the rear muscles so it really looks rear-wheel drive.”
The as-yet-unnamed electric SUV will feature fast-charging capabilities, thanks to its 800V electrical architecture. With an estimated range of around 500 miles on a full charge, it’s evident that Alfa Romeo is not compromising on battery size, which might pose a weight challenge while delivering the expected driving experience.
Most notably, the primary markets for this new Alfa Romeo EV are the USA and China, although it will also be available in Europe. Imparato explained, “If I stay in Western Europe [only], I will never [build the car], because the volumes are small and because I don’t know how the segment will evolve.”
In terms of interior technology, the new Alfa Romeo will feature a tech-forward cabin with a high-end infotainment system and hands-free driving technology enabled by the STLA Brain architecture from Stellantis. Importantly, Alfa Romeo is determined to maintain driver-focused interiors without overwhelming digital interfaces.
Alfa Romeo’s shift to electrification showcases its commitment to driver engagement, alluring design, and a high-performance ethos. While the road ahead will undoubtedly be exciting for Alfa Romeo enthusiasts, the final verdict will come from the driving experience itself. If the electric version of the new 33 Stradale is any indication, Alfa Romeo’s electric future appears promising.
