Alfa Romeo hints at a potential comeback of its Autotutto minivan
Alfa Romeo has hinted at the possibility of resurrecting the “Autotutto” minivan, a historical model that was previously marketed under the name “Alfa Romeo Romeo” between 1954 and 1966. While it’s not confirmed for production yet, the design chief at Alfa Romeo, Alejandro Mesonero-Romanos, mentioned in an interview with Autocar magazine that the idea is not as crazy as it might sound. This comes as the niche for luxurious minivans is growing, with models like the Buick GL8 and Lexus LM available in China, and the Volvo EM90 and the new Toyota Century SUV featuring van-like sliding doors.
The original Alfa Romeo Autotutto was available in various configurations to cater to different needs, including a commercial van, double-cab pickup, drop-side truck, a high-roof van, and the Promiscuo van with more seats and windows. These classic vans were offered with various powertrains, including supercharged two-cylinder diesel and detuned Twin Cam gasoline units.
Although Alfa Romeo has its hands full with other upcoming models, including a sub-Tonale small crossover in 2024 and electric replacements for the Giulia and Stelvio later in the decade, a possible return of the Autotutto minivan could be on the horizon. Stellantis, the parent company of Alfa Romeo, is also reviving other Italian brands like Lancia and Fiat’s performance division Abarth.
