Volvo Cars has taken a significant step towards electrification with the introduction of the new XC90 ‘B’-badged cars. These new models represent Volvo’s ongoing commitment to electrifying its lineup and aligning with its vision for an eco-friendly future. While the external design changes may be subtle, the most significant transformation has occurred under the hood.
Details:
The XC90 ‘B’ models are part of Volvo’s electrification strategy and complement the existing T8 Twin Engine plug-in hybrid variant, which is available on the Volvo XC90.
The new XC90 ‘B5’ features a 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine paired with a 48V mild-hybrid system. This powertrain produces 183 kW of power and 350 Nm of torque, coupled with an eight-speed automatic transmission. The transition from the previous ‘T5’ to ‘B5’ models involves a slight power drop from 187 to 183 kW, while torque remains unchanged at 350 Nm.
The Volvo XC90 boasts contemporary Scandinavian design, both inside and out. The Inscription model brings subtle enhancements to the already award-winning design, including features like Nappa Soft Leather Perforated and ventilated upholstery, multi-directional lumbar support, and 20-inch alloy wheels with a diamond-cut light grey design.
The vehicle’s interior features a laminated panoramic moonroof with a power sunshade, heated front seats, automatically dimmed rearview mirrors, and door mirrors. It also includes various safety and technology features such as Sensus navigation, lane-keeping aid, adaptive cruise control, and a 12-inch infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility.
The mechanical refinement of the XC90 ‘B5’ is lauded for its mild-hybrid setup, which provides a smooth and quiet driving experience, even during hard acceleration. The XC90 caters to luxury-oriented family use while maintaining a sporty edge. It competes with top-class rivals like the Land Rover Discovery Sport P300e R-Dynamic SE and the Lexus RX350L EX.
The Volvo XC90 B5 AWD Inscription model is priced at R1,283,500 and boasts 183 kW of power, 350 Nm of torque, and a 0-100 km/h time of 8.44 seconds, with a top speed of 180 km/h and a fuel consumption of 8.76 L/100 km.
The Land Rover Discovery Sport P300e R-Dynamic SE is priced at R1,411,600 and offers 277 kW of power, 540 Nm of torque, a 0-100 km/h time of 6.6 seconds, a top speed of 209 km/h, and an impressive fuel consumption of 2.50 L/100 km.
The Lexus RX350L EX model, priced at R1,233,500, delivers 216 kW of power, 358 Nm of torque, a 0-100 km/h time of 8.33 seconds, a top speed of 200 km/h, and a fuel consumption of 12.20 L/100 km.
Volvo’s commitment to improving efficiency and maintaining its reputation for craftsmanship is evident in the updated XC90 models. While power changes are marginal, the company’s focus on sustainable technology and enhanced driving experience remains strong.
