BMW unveils all-electric iX2 as premium compact sports activity coupe

BMW iX2

The BMW iX2 arrives as the second generation of the model, exclusively available in an all-electric variant

BMW has officially revealed the first-ever BMW iX2, a premium compact Sports Activity Coupe (SAC) that marks the debut of the second generation of the model. The iX2, which continues the legacy of the X2 name but is exclusively available in an all-electric guise, is positioned as a sporty and efficient option for those seeking a compact yet stylish SUV.

The iX2 is initially offered with a single powertrain variant known as the iX2 xDrive30. This powertrain configuration features a dual-motor all-wheel-drive setup and is equipped with a high-voltage battery that has a usable capacity of 64.8 kilowatt-hours (kWh). It produces a combined power output of 313 horsepower (230 kilowatts) with the temporary boost function and offers a torque figure of 364 pound-feet (494 Newton-meters). This powertrain enables the iX2 to accelerate from 0 to 62 mph (0-100 kilometers per hour) in 5.6 seconds and reach a top speed of 111 mph (180 kph).

One of the key highlights of the iX2 is its impressive electric range. With a fully charged battery, it can travel between 259 miles (417 kilometers) and 279 miles (449 kilometers) on a single charge. This range performance positions the iX2 as slightly more efficient than its SUV-like counterpart, the iX1, which offers a maximum range of 272 miles (438 kilometers) according to the WLTP cycle.

In terms of charging capabilities, the iX2 can make use of DC fast charging at rates of up to 130 kW. BMW offers a standard onboard AC charger that can deliver up to 11 kW of power to the high-voltage battery, allowing for a full charge in approximately six and a half hours. Additionally, there’s an optional 22 kW three-phase AC charger that can reduce charging time to three hours and 45 minutes. Using DC power at its highest rate, the iX2 can charge from 10 to 80 percent in just 29 minutes. The vehicle also features predictive thermal management for the high-voltage battery, ensuring that it is conditioned before each DC fast charge. The “Max Performance Charging” software optimizes the charging efficiency by allowing the highest possible power rate to reach the battery right from the start of the charging process, even when the state of charge (SoC) is below 50 percent.

The iX2’s exterior design follows the theme of BMW’s Sports Activity Coupes, which are known for their sporty silhouettes. The illuminated kidney grille, as seen on the larger X6, is available as an optional feature, along with standard LED headlights. The rear end of the iX2 has been entirely redesigned compared to the previous generation, featuring a more coupe-like crossover profile.

Inside, the iX2 offers a dual-zone automatic climate control system with a heat pump for enhanced cold-weather efficiency. Standard features include Bluetooth connectivity, cloud-based GPS navigation, and a six-speaker sound system with an amplifier. The optional BMW Operating System 9 is available, along with a pair of 10.25-inch and 10.7-inch displays. The trunk offers a flexible storage solution with a volume ranging from 525 to 1,400 liters, depending on the position of the rear seat rests.

The iX2’s dimensions measure 179.2 inches (4,554 millimeters) in length, 72.6 inches (1,845 millimeters) in width, and 61.4 inches (1,560 millimeters) in height. It weighs approximately 4,453 pounds (2,020 kilograms). Production of the iX2 is scheduled to begin soon at BMW’s plant in Regensburg, Germany, with European deliveries planned to commence in March 2024.

While a second all-electric version of the iX2 is expected to arrive in the summer of 2024, the iX2 EV is not slated for release in the United States, although its internal combustion engine (ICE) counterpart will be offered in select trim levels in the U.S.

The BMW iX2 represents a stylish and efficient option in the growing electric vehicle market, showcasing BMW’s commitment to electrification and expanding its range of all-electric models. The iX2 aims to appeal to drivers who value performance, range, and a sporty design in a compact SUV package.
